Port of Ferrol

Access

ROADS

Access to the Port of Ferrol is by means of a roundabout at the end of the AP-9 motorway, taking traffic towards the New Dock and Main Road. The Main Road runs parallel to Fernández Ladreda Dock as far as the Breakwater Quay. Six perpendicular roads lead off from this Main Road, providing access to the torage zones and Fernández Ladreda Dock, which in turn leads to the Breakwater Quay. The Port of Ferrol’s commercial docks can be accessed by two roads. The main access route is the direct link from the roundabout leading to the AP-9 (Atlantic Motorway) in the direction of A Coruña, southern Galicia (Santiago de Compostela and Vigo) and Portugal. The AP-9 links up with the A-6 A Coruña- Madrid Road (North-western Highway), and in turn with the Spanish and European road networks. There is an alternative access route from the main city roads from the Baja del Puerto Road, which leads to the roundabout at the entrance to the port. The AP-9 also has a junction with the C-646 and the C-641 leading to the north of the province and the Iberian Peninsula leading to the European road network.

RAILWAY

The Port of Ferrol has a direct railway connection with the town’s station. The branch line Ferrol-Betanzos links the port with the rest of Spain [line Madrid-Coruña via León]. This line has the RENFE width, a simple track and is not electrified until Monforte.

Once in the Port, the inner railway net is made up by two main alignments, one in parallel to the shelf of the Fernández Ladreda Dock and another in parallel to the stores and warehouses in Calle Principal. Both of them join forming a ring and giving service to the Ro-Ro ramp located in the knot between Espigón Exterior and the Dock’s service esplanade and to the Ro-Ro ramp located in the Northern border of the Fernández Ladreda Dock.

There are two branch lines; one leaves from the fish market along the Espigón Exterior and another from Calle Principal northwards until the crossroads with the road to Nuevo Muelle. Outside the port entrance, there are several level crossings with light and sound control systems.
