Port City

Tourism

The city of Ferrol, also known as “Ciudad Departamental”, was proclaimed Site of Historic-Artistic interest on 9th March 1984. About 78.000 people live in the city, which has become the economic and commercial nerve centre of the region called Ferrolterra, as well as one of Galicia’s most booming towns.
Ferrol is a city of contrasts, in close contact with the sea and full of appeals. Its most emblematic places are undoubtedly Ferrol Vello (the old part of town), which still preserves its medieval layout with narrow streets that go down to the port, and Barrio de la Magdalena with magnificent galleries from the 19th century and a rationalist design, only broken by well kept houses and squares.

Moreover, spread all over the town, there are several modernistic buildings as the Jofre Theatre and neoclassical ones as the Co-Cathedral of San Xiao or the San Francisco Covent. From the city’s contemporary buildings, the Army facilities stand out as a sign of the town’s military tradition, which has left in the surroundings of the estuary beautiful fortresses as the Castle of San Felipe or the Castle of La Palma that will be proclaimed World Heritage Site soon.
